How much does it cost to participate in a Motivate conference?

Revised charges from September 2009

Charging policy

Information below is for our programme of one-day and month-long conferences. Long projects are costed separately.

Generally the cost given is for a conference, which will consist of:

  • two VCs about a month apart and lasting for about 1 1/4 hours or a day lasting from 10.00 until 15.00 (UK time)
  • project resources and any additional resources required for follow-up work to be done between the two VCs or during the day
  • technical support as required
  • DVDs of the VC sessions

Charges are for a VC centre:

  • a VC centre comprises everyone present at particular venue during the VC sessions
  • this means that two or more schools can group together at one venue (perhaps a school or a CLC) and share the cost between them

Primary conferences

  • £60 per conference for each VC centre for up to 40 students, more pro rata or by negotiation for a large number

11-16 conferences

  • £180 per conference for each VC centre for up to 40 students, more pro rata or by negotiation for a large number

Post-16 conferences

  • £120 per conference for each VC centre for up to 15 students
  • £180 per conference for each VC centre for 15 or more students

Schools not in the UK should contact us to find out what charging arrangements would be made for them. We try to encourage the participation of schools in the developing world by giving them free places where necessary.

Charging Policy

The Motivate Project has been organising videoconferences since 1999, providing enrichment material for school students of all ages on mathematical, scientific and cross-curricular topics. We provide:

  • day conferences, conferences consisting of two VCs about a month apart, long projects, and other occasional events by videoconference
  • the opportunity to interact with a mathematician, scientist or other professional and students of a similar age from other schools, including international links
  • follow-up project work and supporting resources on our website for students and teachers to use
  • academic and/or technical support as required

It costs us in the region of £4000 to £10 000 to put on a conference or long project, depending on the number of VCs, the complexity of the materials provided, the difficulties schools have in making videoconference connection with us, and the location of the speaker.

We are putting a cancellation policy in place from 1 January 2008. It doesn't happen often, but when schools cancel too late for us to offer the place to other schools, then others who would like to have participated are disappointed, and, of course, we are left with fewer schools taking part than we would wish. This is disappointing for the other participants, as well as being a loss to us. Unavoidable problems which occur on the day of a VC will continue to be dealt with in the light of the situation, as we have done in the past.
