How much does it cost to participate in a Motivate conference?

Charging policy

Until July 2008, all primary school children particpating in conferences which last for one day or a month are free, but there is a charge for participating in long projects. However, from September 2008, we are introducing a charge for primary conferences of £60 per centre (so the cost can be shared between schools if more than one participate from a single VC centre).

Secondary schools participating in one day or month-long conference for KS3 / 4 (11-16 year-old) students:

  • £180 per conference for up to 40 students
  • additional students will be charged pro rata.

Secondary schools, 6th form colleges or FE colleges participating in one day conferences for 6th form students (16+):

  • £80 per conference for up to 15, or £130 for 15 or more, students
  • this cost will rise to £120 and £180 respectively from September 2008

Those conferences which do not follow either our one day or month-long formats are charged at a rate appropriate for what is offered - details will be given on the appropriate conference webpage. Conferences intended to be joint events between primary (Year 6) and secondary (Year 7) students are charged for on the basis that secondary students will be participating. We will not book schools onto these conferences unless it is clear that both primary and secondary students will be involved and that the participating schools are prepared to pay the cost between them.

Schools not in the UK should contact us to find out what charging arrangements would be made for them. We try to encourage the participation of schools in the developing world by giving them free places where necessary.

Long projects 2008-09

Information on the long projects we can offer in 2008-09, including costs, will be available later in 2008. Projects are priced according to their duration and whether we also need to provide help for international partner schools.

Maths days and courses

We also provide maths days (including Further Maths days) via VC, short introductory sessions for students, and sessions for teachers on VC as an educational medium:

  • Maths Day activities organised for a day or half-day or other time to suit, teacher CPD sessions normally 1 hour
  • project work set on the Motivate website and tailored to the requirements of the students involved
  • appropriate supporting materials provided as required
  • all content provided by an experienced teacher or a researcher in a relevant field via videoconference
  • cost: £275 for a half day, £395 for a full day, £100 for a 1 hour student session or teacher CPD course, other times by arrangement

Charging Policy

The Motivate Project has been organising videoconferences since 1999, providing enrichment material for school students of all ages on mathematical, scientific and cross-curricular topics. We provide:

  • day conferences, conferences consisting of two VCs about a month apart, long projects, and other occasional events by videoconference
  • the opportunity to interact with a mathematician, scientist or other professional and students of a similar age from other schools, including international links
  • follow-up project work and supporting resources on our website for students and teachers to use
  • academic and/or technical support as required

It costs us in the region of £2500 to £10 000 to put on a conference or long project, depending on the number of VCs, the complexity of the materials provided, the difficulties schools have in making videoconference connection with us, and the location of the speaker.

We are putting a cancellation policy in place from 1 January 2008. It doesn't happen often, but when schools cancel too late for us to offer the place to other schools, then those who might have wished to be involved are disappointed, and, of course, we are left with fewer schools participating than we would wish. This is disappointing for the other participants, as well as being a loss to us. Unavoidable problems which occur on the day of a VC will continue to be dealt with in the light of the situation, as we have done in the past.
