Answers to Task 3a: the Symmetries of the Square

The 8 symmetries are:

  • leaving the square alone
  • rotating it through 90 degrees clockwise about its centre
  • rotating it through 180 degrees clockwise about its centre
  • rotating it through 270 degrees clockwise about its centre (or you could call that a rotation through 90 degrees anticlockwise)
  • reflecting it about a vertical axis through the centre
  • reflecting it about a horizontal axis through its centre
  • reflecting it about a diagonal axis running from top left to bottom right through the centre
  • reflecting it about a diagonal axis running from bottom left to top right through the centre
