A Remainder of One

Literacy activities

  • marchingMake sure the books are available for children to read for themselves.
  • They also make great group readers in literacy.
  • Children can write their own division stories on the themes of a remainder of one or dividing up a large number into equal lines.
  • Dramatise the stories for a class, year group or school assembly, using the marching chants:

    "Hup, two, three, four!
We're in the 25th Army Corps.
    Queen's count! Two, three!
    We are the marching infantry."

    "We're going to a picnic!
A hey and a hi dee ho!
    There'll be lots of yummies
    for our tummies,
A hey and a hi dee ho!"

You probably don't have 100 'ants' in the class, but each child could have a label or picture showing how many ants they represent, eg. 5 ants, then you only need 20 children for the whole 100.
