During 2003-03, we were carried out research into how videoconferencing can help students to develop their skills in mathematical communication, and to see if videoconferencing can help to maximise the availability of trained staff in schools. We were fortunate in obtaining a Becta bursary, which enabled this research to be undertaken. It indicated that at the very least, it would be worth doing further research in this area. Our small pilot study indicated that the students who took part in the videoconferences did increase their mathematical communication skills. Holding fortnightly conferences between two classes proved perfectly possible, and had additional positive effects on students' motivation. A paper was presented on this research project at the September 2003 BERA conference by Jenny Gage.
